Description

A Liza Minnelli Cardigan from "Cabaret." Allied Artists, 1972. Made of wool, woven in a geometric pattern in shades of red, brown, blue, purple, and gray, six button front closure, two frontal welt pockets, label reads "Missoni / Made in Italy / Maglia Knitwear Tricot;" worn by the actress as she portrayed "Sally Bowles" during the 'forest scene' with Michael York [as "Brian Roberts"] in the role that won her an Academy Award for 'Best Actress in a Leading Role;' included is a letter from Mr. York stating he consigned this lot directly to Heritage Auctions.

Mr. York relays the following story about this piece: this cardigan was his own, personal sweater that he happened to wear to the location that day. He and Liza Minnelli were filming the 'forest scene' in the woods near the Bavaria Studios in Munich, Germany where the production was headquartered. It was raining lightly that day and very cold. The Wardrobe Department didn't have a warm garment for Liza to wear to keep off the chill, so York lent her this sweater which, even though new in 1971, looked appropriately '1930s' so Liza kept it on while shooting -- overall, an interesting backstory about this memorable scene that leads to the "Sally Bowles" character making an important decision that affects her life as well as "Brian's."
