Description
A "Chewbacca" Mask by Don Post Studios, 1977. Made of rubber with realistic brown and grey fur affixed to it, cut-out eye holes, painted nose, teeth, and mouth; back has opening to put over one's head; back neck area has stamp reading "20th Century / Fox / Film Corp / 1977;" inside of mask stuffed with crumpled pages of the newspaper 'Valley News' from 1978; included with a card signed in black felt-tip ink "To / Terri / Well done! / C-3PO / Anthony Daniels," three color snapshots (one of which shows Daniels signing the card), a vintage Don Post Studios box (but for a Darth Vader mask), and a letter of provenance outlining how these items were obtained. (Please note the box is heavily yellowed due to age and the signature card is Scotch-taped to a scrapbook page.)Mask: 11" x 31"
PROVENANCE:
The current owner was a teenager back in 1978 when she entered a "Star Wars" costume contest in Hollywood, California which was judged by actors Anthony Daniels [who portrayed "C-3PO"] and David Prowse [who portrayed "Darth Vader"]. She made her own costume and won as best "C-3PO," her prize being $10 cash, Daniels' autograph, and this "Chewbacca" mask which was handed to her in a "Darth Vader" box (with a handwritten annotation on it reading "Chew.") She saved all these items for the last 35 years, never suspecting "Stars Wars" would be just as popular today as it was back then!
