Clark Gable "Col. Ulysses Delby 'Lee' Johnson" trench coat from Homecoming. (MGM, 1948) Classic Burberry's tan trench coat with cream plaid lining, shoulder epaulets, pocket flaps, belt with rings, eight large buttons and wrist cuffs (one missing). Dark blue 'Burberry's' Made in England label. Also comes with a tan wool winter lining. Exhibits overall wear and light staining, especially along collar, holes on epaulets where military bars were attached. Costume supervision by Helen Rose. Worn by Clark Gable as "Col. Ulysses Delby 'Lee' Johnson" on the transport ship when he first meets Lana Turner and at the Army medical compound in Homecoming. This coat was one of the highlighted lots in the famous David Weisz Co. MGM Auction of 1970 (lot W-1118). The 1970 auction catalog lists the piece as being "Clark Gable's 'Good Luck' trench coat...Worn first in the 1939 movie Comrade X, and in nearly every modern picture in which Gable appeared." We are able to definitively identify the coat as being worn by Gable in Homecoming (1948). The sale of this coat certainly caught the public's attention. A New York Post article of May 18, 1970 mentions the sale of Gable's "lucky" trench coat among The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers, Wicked Witch of the West hat and Cowardly Lion costume. An article covering the historic MGM sale in the May 22, 1970 issue of Life magazine mentions the "Good Luck" coat and features a photograph of it among other distinguished pieces. Comes with the original David Weisz Co. invoice and delivery order from 1970.
