Description

Clark Gable Army Air Corps military jacket Clark Gable Army Air Corps military jacket. Olive drab officer's coat, single breasted with four-button and belt closure. United States and Air Corps insignia sewn on the collar and lapels, insignia of the 8th Air Force of the left shoulder. Commissioned by Gable and bearing the interior typewritten Phelps-Terkel label [made exclusively for] "Capt. Clark Gable," [Date] "11/10/43," [Store] "Wil.," [Goods] "KB 3504," [Order] "D 3819." Following the devastating news of his wife Carole Lombard's death, Gable enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and shortly after training made a recruiting film, titled "Combat America," with the Eighth Air Force to recruit gunners. Gable spent most of the war in the UK, flying five combat missions. During one of the missions, Gable's aircraft was damaged by flak, some passing through his boot and narrowly missing his head. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts. Interestingly, Adolf Hitler esteemed Gable above all other actors and offered a sizable reward to anyone who captured him unharmed. Gable arrived back in California on November 1, 1943 so this military jacket was ordered after he returned, wearing his uniforms at certain occasions until he was discharged in June, 1944. The buttons appear to have been replaced along the front, the two buttons on the breast pockets are missing. It exhibits only slight fading along the top of the shoulders and remains in excellent condition.
