Description
Chariot driver's armor and cheetah cape from Gladiator. (Dreamworks, 2000) From Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator. This armor can be seen worn by a chariot driver during a battle at the Coliseum in which "Maximus" (Russell Crowe) and his fellow gladiators are pitted against Legionaries in a reenactment of the Battle of Zama. Crafted from foam latex, this armor has an intricate chest-plate with raised patterns. The gold colored cuirass features leather straps that tie the front and back of the armor together at the shoulders, and locks at the waist with numerous buckles. On the interior section of the armor are strips of black nylon molded into the foam latex and riveted together to hold the leather pieces securely. Written on the inside the armor using black marker is "Ricardo Costume 5 Stunt Suit No 1," indicating that this piece was worn by stuntman Ricardo Cruz. Paired with the cuirass is a cape made from fabric and leather made to look like cheetah fur. When laid flat, the cape appears to be in the shape of a large animal, however the material is absolutely not authentic fur. This piece was ultimately tied around the neck of the chariot driver with strips of leather that have since been removed. The piece features some wear due to production use and storage, but remains in overall good condition.Heritage Auctions provides detailed information when available but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
