Cecil B. DeMille personal 1934 Cleopatra script with "Cecil B. DeMille Library" bookplate. (Paramount, 1934) Vintage original book bound studio script measuring approx. 8.5 x 14 x .75 in. Brown textured leatherette cover with "Cleopatra" down the spine in gold. The film's reception varied. Mordaunt Hall of The New York Times called Cleopatra "one of the director's most ambitious spectacles" and singled out Wilcoxon's performance as "excellent, especially in the more dramatic sequences". Film Daily called it a "sumptuous historical drama" with a "strong cast" and "good entertainment values", but John Mosher of The New Yorker wrote that "Even as extravaganza it's moderate", and called the dialogue "the worst I have ever heard in the talkies", Variety agreed "Often the lines drew titters that are not being angled for", but maintained, "Photographically the picture is superb". Exhibiting age, production use and handling, with rubbing to the cover and flaking edges, some spinal separation and edge toning to pages. In vintage good condition.
