    An Academy Special Award©®™ Presented to Thomas Armat, 1947. An Oscar©®™ statuette with a brass placard on the front base reading "Academy Special Award / To Thomas Armat / One of the small group of pioneers whose belief / in a new medium, and whose contributions to its development / blazed the trail, along which the motion picture has progressed / in their lifetime, from obscurity to worldwide acclaim;" a smaller brass placard on the back base reads " Academy of / Motion Picture / Arts and Sciences / First Award / 1947." (Please note there is a heavy patina on the form and a number of chips on the base due to age.)
    Height: 13 1/2"; Weight: Approximately 12 lbs.

    PROVENANCE:
    Thomas J. Armat [1866-1948] was the American inventor who invented the first patented American film projector. While working with Thomas Edison, Armat refined how this film projector worked, thus paving the way for the new medium of "moving pictures" to be seen by audiences worldwide.

    This Oscar©®™ was consigned directly to Heritage Auctions by Armat's step-grandson who inherited it from his family.
