Description

Stan Laurel Signed Photos and Early Documents. An early, 7.5" x 9" photo of a very young, almost elfin Stan Laurel, signed in blue fountain ink, "Still - Silly old Joey!! Love to you both! Stan." Accompanying the photo is an amazing collection of documents, contracts, correspondence and datebooks, dating as far back as 1912, regarding Edgar Hurley, with whom Stan toured during the Fred Karno vaudeville era. Laurel won his early distinction in the Karno company, in which a fellow member was Charlie Chaplin (Laurel was his understudy). The documents include a July 23, 1912 letter on Karno's stationery, signed by Karno in pencil and threatening legal action if Hurley violated his contract, and even Hurley's French drivers license, with photo and signature! The Laurel photo has some surface damage on the hat he's holding -- Fair condition, but a stunning piece nonetheless. The items (nearly 100 years old) are in surprisingly Good condition. Incredible artifacts from the early show business adventures of a comedy immortal. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
