Description

Stan Laurel Signed Employment Agreement with Roach Studios. By 1936, Laurel and Hardy were as strong as ever, but Laurel's dealings with producer Hal Roach had been strained to the breaking point by artistic differences. Stand-offs between the two were commonplace during the late 1930s, with Roach often threatening to pair Hardy with someone else. Laurel's contract with Roach expired a year before Hardy's, and for a brief time the duo was indeed separated. In October 1938, Roach's rival Mack Sennett announced that he had signed Laurel to star in comedy features for his new studio. Those films were never made, since by April of 1939 the dispute between Laurel and Roach was settled and the comedy team was working for him again. They made two more films for Roach before splitting with him for good and signing with 20th Century-Fox and MGM. This 25-page employment agreement dates from that turbulent period -- specifically, October 8, 1937 -- and is signed by Stan Laurel on the last page in black ink. It paid Laurel $2,500 a week for two years, as well allowing him to retain writing and directing duties to the tune of $25,000 per picture (a degree of creative control Laurel was not allowed at Fox or MGM). A great item with intriguing content, in Very Fine condition with some very light wear and discoloration. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
