Mark Hellinger, Beatrice Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, and Henry K. Thaw Archive. A scandalous group of correspondence that includes an autograph letter to Hellinger from Evelyn Nesbit, signed "E.N.", eight pages, in pencil, in which Nesbit details the shabby treatment she has received from her ex-husband Harry K. Thaw who had shot and killed the starlet's former paramour, Stanford White; an autograph letter signed "Evelyn N.", five pages, n.d., haranguing Hellinger for his story on her past and tempestuous relationships with White and Thaw; an autograph letter signed "Evelyn Nesbit", n.d., inviting Hellinger to Nesbit's opening at the Wivel Restaurant; a Christmas card from Harry K. Thaw signed, "H. K. Thaw" in pencil; a telegram to Hellinger from Thaw, mentioning his murder trial and commenting on prosecuting attorney William Travers Jerome; Beatrice "Bess" Houdini typed letter signed and annotated, on Houdini letterhead, relaying to Hellinger that the New York Graphic article "Houdini Message a Big Hoax!" (printed the day before she wrote the letter) was false, and claiming that she did hear Houdini's "code" words in the notorious séance (only one other letter of this nature, written to Walter Winchell, has surfaced); an autograph signed letter, from Bess to Hellinger referring to books of Houdini's she gave the newspaperman; an autograph signed letter, from Bess Houdini apologizing for asking him to visit her at the West Hills Sanitarium, "I am surrounded by mad people...". The first Nesbit letter is brittle with chipping at the edges, the second letter is strong and clear, the third letter has a small tear at the "N" of the signature. All correspondence dates from 1924-29. The first Houdini letter is mounted and the others show evidence of mounting, else Very Good to Fine. From the Mark Hellinger Archive.
