Description

Laurel and Hardy Signed Documents. Fascinating documents regarding Stan Laurel's sometimes tempestuous dealings with Hal Roach Studios include a four-page agreement and release form, dated April 8, 1939, settling Laurel's battles with Roach, signed twice by Laurel and once each by Roach Studios vice president Frank Ross, and secretary Matt D. O'Brien; an ensuing 35-page contract, also dated April 8, 1939, signed once by Laurel, Ross and O'Brien; and a typed letter on Hal Roach Studios Inc. letterhead, dated September 6, 1939, regarding additional material being made for the distribution abroad of Chump at Oxford, signed by Laurel and Ross. Additionally, Laurel, Ross and O'Brien have initialed the pages of the agreement/release form and contract several times. Content of the documents is intriguing, especially the very-detailed contract, which includes this amendment to the "Conduct of Artist" clause: "STUDIO, however, realizes that ARTIST is now engaged in matrimonial difficulties with his present wife, and that on previous occasions former wives of ARTIST have started litigation and/or caused publicity. Publicity and conduct reasonably incidental to such matters shall not be a breach by ARTIST." Documents and signatures in Excellent condition. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
