Harry Houdini Twice-Signed A Magician Among the Spirits First Edition. In the 1920s, after the death of his mother, Houdini spent a fair amount of time exposing fraudulent self-proclaimed psychics and spirit mediums. His skill with illusion and sleight-of-hand made him a formidable debunker, allowing him to expose frauds who had successfully fooled many scientists and academics. Houdini later chronicled these exploits in his 1924 book A Magician Among the Spirits. This first edition copy of the book is signed simply "Houdini" by the master escape artist in black ink on the dedication page; on the front flyleaf he has inscribed "To my good friend Police Commissioner Richard E. Enright with all good wishes and compliments of the author", signed "Houdini" and dated April 23, 1924, in black ink. Enright was New York City's police commissioner from 1918-25, as well as a modestly successful writer of crime fiction. He attended Houdini's funeral in 1926, and spoke at the dedication of the monument erected at his grave in 1927. The book is in Fine to Very Fine condition with some shelf wear to the cover and to the head and tail of the spine, bumped corners, fading to the spine, and some toning to the flyleaf that does not detract from the inscription or signature. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
