Greta Garbo Original Signed Personal Check. This rare personal check, 6.25" x 2.75", drawn on the Chase Manhattan Bank of New York was filled out and signed in blue felt tip by the legendary Greta Garbo. The check, dated October 27, 1969, is made out to Peter Viertel (1920-2007), an author and screenwriter whose Hollywood credits include Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur (1942), John Huston's The African Queen (1951), and Beat the Devil (1953), The Sun Also Rises (1957), The Old Man and the Sea (1958), and White Hunter, Black Heart (1990), which he adapted from his own novel for director Clint Eastwood. He was the son of Salka Viertel, who co-starred with Garbo in the German-language version of Anna Christie (1930) and wrote the screenplays for three of Garbo's best films, Queen Christina (1933), The Painted Veil (1934), and Anna Karenina (1935). Garbo did not sign often. In fact, during the making of Anna Karenina, the reclusive actress refused to sign an autograph for costar Basil Rathbone (who was playing her husband), then the highest-paid freelance actor in Hollywood. After Garbo passed away in 1992, details about Peter Viertel's close friendship with Garbo were published in his autobiography, Dangerous Friends: At Large with Huston and Hemingway. The reverse is signed in blue ink by Peter Viertel, who also included the note "Deposit to the account of Conte Frederic Chandon de Briailles", who was president of the Chandon Champagne Company and a good friend of Garbo. This check is a fascinating bit of Garbo history, and in Very Fine condition. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
