Description

Gregg Toland Signed Contract with Samuel Goldwyn Company (1932). October 1, 1932, one page, 8.5" x 11". This contract signed by Gregg Toland and Samuel Goldwyn, Inc., Vice President Abraham Lehr extended the ace cinematographer's contract for an additional year at a salary of $200 per week. While working for Goldwyn during this period, Toland shot The Kid from Spain (1932) and Roman Scandals (1933), both starring Eddie Cantor, The Masquerader (1933) with Ronald Colman, and Nana (1934), co-starring Anna Sten, Lionel Atwill, and Mae Clarke. In between Goldwyn projects, he also served as director of photography on the MGM films The Nuisance and Tugboat Annie (both 1933). Later in his career, he created the stunning cinematography for such masterpieces as William Wyler's Wuthering Heights (1939), John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (1941). Tragically, Toland died of a coronary thrombosis at the young age of 44, and the cinema lost one of its true photographic geniuses. This contract, featuring a bold Toland signature, is in Fine condition with two hole punches and minor paper-clip marks in top margin. Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
