    Description

Edgar G. Ulmer's Signed Sketch of Mary, Queen of Scots, and His Sketch of Queen Elizabeth. During the planning stages for the doomed film Loves of Three Queens, Edgar Ulmer considered including Mary, Queen of Scots and Mary's arch foe, Queen Elizabeth. The idea fizzled, but the 9.5" x 13.5" design sketches that Ulmer drew survive. The sketches decorated the Ulmer family homes for years. Both are matted and framed to 15" x 19" and signed by the director, and are in overall Fine condition. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation and Trust Corp. Accompanied by an LOA from Arianne Ulmer Cipes. Requires third party shipping.

    More Information:

During the planning stages for the doomed film Loves of Three Queens, Edgar Ulmer considered including Mary, Queen of Scots and Mary's arch foe, Queen Elizabeth. The idea fizzled, but the sketches that Ulmer drew survive.

His 9.5" x 13.5" sketch of Mary, matted into a 15" x 19" frame, presents the Queen with beautifully noble, patrician features, her vaguely Katharine Hepburn-ish face slightly tilted; she wears a splendid brocade dress, a Tam o'Shanter hat with feather, a jewel necklace, and she carries a long pointed dagger in her left hand. Ulmer began the sketch and then obviously started over again -- his first attempt at head and hat still visible above Mary's head. He scrawled his signature (faint but visible) in the lower left area. Picture has a .75" tear to the top border, some light creasing and staining/toning.

Ulmer's 9.5" x 13" sketch of Elizabeth (not signed), matted in 15" x 19" frame, depicts the monarch as wasp-waisted, full-lipped, and foxy, with regal gown, fanned collar, necklace and earrings, hairdo with widow's peak, and hypnotic, deadly eyes. Light creasing; minor paper damage in upper left corner.

Based on these depictions, it seems clear that Ulmer would have favored Mary over Elizabeth in a royal battle.
