Description

Edgar G. Ulmer's Signed Handwritten Will, plus Funeral Book and Copies of the Death Certificate and Eulogies. A profoundly sad and startlingly revealing item, handwritten and signed by Edgar G. Ulmer. The document, dated May 29, 1968, presents Ulmer's "last will and testament," composed at a time when the 63-year old Ulmer was seriously considering leaving his wife of 33 years for a mistress with whom he'd fathered a child in 1966. Ulmer, writing in blue ink, itemizes his bequests to wife Shirley, daughter Arianne, and his "youngest child and daughter" Carola, requests his mistress be appointed Carola's legal guardian, and he appoints Shirley administrator of his estate. Ulmer asks for "the forgiveness of my wife Shirley and daughter" and closes, "Please cremate my remnants and have nobody at my funeral. With my love, Edgar G. Ulmer." Additionally, the lot includes the 4" x 9.5" envelope on which Ulmer has written, "Edgar G. Ulmer's Will and Testament May 29.1968", and a copy of the revised, typed three-page will dated March 30, 1971; a copy of Ulmer's death certificate; the funeral "Memorial Record" book, including the signatures of the mourners; the signed flower cards; a dried rose from the casket; and copies of the eulogies as delivered by the presiding Rabbi and by actor friend Fritz Feld. All pieces are in Good to Excellent condition. Ulmer's autograph is very desirable and difficult to find; the bold, full ink signature on the original will, along with its telling content, makes this piece a uniquely dramatic artifact. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation Corp. Accompanied by an LOA from Arianne Ulmer Cipes.

    More Information:

A profoundly sad and startlingly revealing item, handwritten and signed by Edgar G. Ulmer when he was, as his daughter Arianne remembers, "in a terrible state." The 8.5" x 14" yellow lined paper, dated May 29, 1968, presents Ulmer's "last will and testament," composed at a time when the 63-year old Ulmer was seriously considering leaving his wife of 33 years for a European mistress with whom he'd fathered a child in 1966. Ulmer's Will and Testament May 29.1968." Shortly after drafting this will, Ulmer suffered the first of several devastating strokes, and Shirley took care of him for the final four years of his life.

Also included in the lot is a copy of the revised, typed three-page will dated March 30, a 1971 three-page will, and a copy of Ulmer's death certificate. Ulmer, incidentally, did have mourners at his funeral at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and the lot includes the funeral "Memorial Record" book, including the signatures of the mourners, the signed flower cards, a dried rose from the casket, and copies of the eulogies as delivered by the presiding Rabbi and by actor friend Fritz Feld.

All pieces are in Good to Excellent condition. Ulmer's autograph is very desirable and difficult to find; the bold, full ink signature on the original will, along with its telling content, makes this piece a uniquely dramatic artifact. The additional material that accompanies it makes this one of the most compellingly personal lots of Hollywood history Heritage has ever offered. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation Corp.
