Claude Rains Letters to his Daughter, with Signed Envelopes. These two letters from Claude Rains to his daughter, both handwritten on his personal stationery, give marvelous insight into the man's humor, depth of emotion, and love for his only child. The first letter is dated September 2, 1964, at a time when his sixth wife, Rosemary, was dying of cancer. Rains writes in part: "She is a very brave soul...send handkerchiefs, keep your chin up - I was told to give a good performance for her. So I do." Rains signs it, "Love, The Dean." The second letter is postmarked August 15, 1966 (Rosemary had died New Year's Eve of 1964) and is more lighthearted; Rains relates that Irving Rapper (who had directed Rains in 1942's Now Voyager) had offered him the role of a bishop ("Wow!" writes Rains, suggesting that his daughter play "a choir boy"). Irrepressible ladies' man Rains (then 76) also writes about "a charming woman (not many hereabouts) who raised her two boys on my (recorded) Bible stories: now they are 17 and 20. Unfortunately her husband's a charmer too, So that's that!" He signs off, "Love and kisses, Your naughty old (young) Fa Fa." Each letter comes with the original hand-addressed envelope, and Rains has written his full name and New Hampshire address on the reverse of the 1966 envelope. In Very Good condition. From the Claude Rains Estate Archive.
