Description

Claude Rains Leather-Bound Scrapbook, with Handwritten Letter from Rains. A remarkable piece of theater and Hollywood history! This leather-bound, 8.5" x 11.5" scrapbook was the creation of a British (and ardent) female Rains fan, who in September of 1940, sent it from England to Rains' two-year-old daughter Jennifer. (Note: Jennifer Rains would change her name to Jessica Rains when she became an actress, since there was already a "Jennifer Rains" in Actors Equity.) The original owner wrote this sentiment inside the scrapbook, "Hoping it will give you a little of the pleasure it always gives me." (The book was also now safe from possible destruction in the London blitz.) The scrapbook contains 49 pages, packed with original newspaper and magazine clippings and reviews (with photos and wonderful caricatures), mostly devoted to Rains' London stage career in the 1920s, as well as some fascinating coverage of his films The Invisible Man and Crime Without Passion. The scrapbook also boasts a double-sided handwritten letter from Rains in fountain ink that he signed "CR" (the lady who originally kept the scrapbook has added a character analysis of his handwriting). Somebody in the Rains family has added a review of the film Caesar and Cleopatra (1946) inside the front cover. David J. Skal found this scrapbook of great assistance in researching his 2008 biography of Rains, Claude Rains: An Actor's Voice, authorized by Rains' daughter. Fascinating material on a bygone show business era, lovingly dedicated to the formative years of a brilliant actor, as well as evidence of the rather obsessive admiration Claude Rains inspired in some female fans. Very Good condition. From the Claude Rains Estate Archive. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
