Claude Rains Correspondence to His Daughter. These four different communications from Claude Rains to his daughter certainly run the gamut of emotions. The first is a handwritten note referring to the first TV showing of The Pied Piper (a musical version starring Van Johnson with Rains as the singing Mayor), dating it to 1957. Rains notes: "The kids will like it but what fans I have are going to wonder what the Hell has happened to Rains. 'The guy's a comic.' All my love, Fa Fa." (Note: Jessica as a little girl called Rains "Fa Fa" because she couldn't pronounce "Father"; later, when she was a teenager and embarrassed to call him "Fa Fa" in front of her boyfriends, Rains suggested she simply call him "Claude.") The second note, handwritten on his personal stationery and dated June 16, 1964, is heartbreaking as Rains reveals to his daughter that his wife Rosemary has cancer: "The garden is full of flowers and so is the house, but they don't mean anything anymore," and signed "C". The third piece is a florist envelope on which Rains has penciled "Darling you may get me before you get this both with my love Pie Face." The fourth item is a telegram sent to Jessica Rains at Cafe LeMama in New York with the message "Have fun I love you BB." The telegram's date is April 12, 1967, about a month-and-half before Rains died. Moving insight into a complex man and a masterful actor. In Very Good to Excellent condition. From the Claude Rains Estate Archive.
