Claude Rains' Assorted Correspondence. In his final years, Claude Rains decided to write his memoirs and engaged journalist Jonathan Root to assist him. Sadly, Rains' declining health delayed completion and Root predeceased the actor in March of 1967. This lot offers correspondence from that ill-fated project, including four telegrams to Root dated April 1965 to December 1966 (one an Easter greeting, one a Christmas sentiment, one regarding a meeting for the project and one noting Rains entering the hospital). There are also two envelopes addressed to Root in Rains' hand, one postmarked July 13, 1966, on which the actor had written "Rains Sandwich N.H." on the reverse; and one postmarked December 7, 1966, with Rains' New Hampshire return address sticker on the reverse. Also of interest is a July 8, 1966, typed letter on the stationery of the Chenery Library of Boston University, with the Chief of Reference and Special Collections expressing, "I am delighted, honored and proud that I shall one day be the curator of the Claude Rains Collection." Stapled to it is a handwritten note on Rains' personal stationery, in which he writes to his daughter, "Dear Jenni, Send this to the bastard! Love, C." By the way, Boston University does house the Claude Rains Collection, and David J. Skal received access to Jonathan Root's taped interviews with Rains for his recent book, Claude Rains, An Actor's Voice, authorized by Rains' daughter. In Excellent condition. From the Claude Rains Estate Archive.
