    Description

A Scrapbook Filled with Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Orson Welles and Other Movie Star Autographs and Letters, 1940s. Oversized, with a wooden cover reading "The / Hollywood / Story / by / Mary Jessma," a 1930s-1940s-era radio show host who covered the Hollywood beat from a radio station in St. Petersburg, Florida and who compiled this scrapbook for herself, approximately 55 pages filled with newspaper clippings, advertisements for her show, black and white photographs of her on on the job, postcards, and numerous autographs and/or letters from actors who she interviewed for her show; the stars who signed the actual pages (in black fountain pen ink) include (in alphabetical order): Robert Alda, Eve Arden, Noah Beery, Jr., Eddie Bracken, David Bruce, Constance Collier, Tom Conway, Maurice Costello, Cass Daley, Andy Devine, Judy Garland, Bonita Granville, Charley Grapewin, Kathryn Grayson, Monte Hale, Gabby Hayes, Van Johnson, Gene Kelly, Audrey Long, Keye Luke, Ida Lupino, Frank Morgan, Ann Rutherford, Frank Sinatra, Bob Stebbins, Dean Stockwell (as a child), Phillip Terry, Audrey Totter, and Jane Withers; the stars who sent signed letters to Jessma (which are now glued to these scrapbook pages) include (in alphabetical order): Joe E. Brown, Charles Coburn, Bing Crosby, Alice Faye, Paul Henreid, Hugh Herbert, Charles Korvin, Hedy Lamarr, Dennis Morgan, Chester Morris, Tyrone Power (two letters), Edward G. Robinson, Mickey Rooney, John Sutton, Orson Welles (on Mercury Theatre letterhead), Jane Withers, and Loretta Young -- overall, a rare glimpse into the backstory of a now-forgotten early radio journalist but one who had access to the A-listers of the day. (Please note many of the pages of the scrapbook are now very brittle due to age and there is minor creasing and tearing on some, but overall, it's still intact, though the front cover has become unattached.)
