    A John Ford-Owned Oil Painting Related to "The Long Voyage Home." United Artists, 1940. Rendered on canvas, titled 'Death at Sea,' image depicts the dying Ward Bond as "Yank" while Joseph Sawyer as "Davis" and Wilfred Lawson as "Captain" look on, signed in the lower right corner "James Chapin."
    Framed: 42" x 49;" Work Only: 36" x 40"

    PROVENANCE:
    This piece was consigned directly by Dan Ford, grandson of John Ford; included is a letter of provenance from him noting that this painting was one of nine commissioned by Walter Wanger, producer of "The Long Voyage Home," which was based on a series of one-act plays by Eugene O'Neill. The film, which won the New York Film Critics Award as 'Best Film,' was directed by John Ford and starred John Wayne, Ward Bond, and Thomas Mitchell. Because this film was one of John Ford's personal favorites, this painting hung in his house for many years.
