A James Cagney-Received Handwritten Letter from John Ford from the "Mogambo" Location Set in Africa, 1953. One page, penned in blue fountain pen ink on lined notebook paper, written from "Tanganyika" [in Tanzania], no date but postmarked in part "Ja 53," addressed to "Dear Jimmie," reading in part "Tough location, English crew!, etc. / but we'll survive [a reference to the 1953 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film, "Mogambo" starring Clark Gable, Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner] / I guess you're her [Meta Sterne, Ford's script supervisor and secretary] / favorite actor, as you are mine / ...My deepest affection / Jack," Ford also writes an inside joke about "mussels" and being "pretty high" but its meaning is now lost; included with its original transmittal envelope simply addressed to "James Cagney, Esq. / Northridge, Calif / U.S.A." and the return address on the verso noting "Ford Box 950 / Nairobi, Kenya;" the two had just made the 20th Century Fox film, "What Price Glory," the year before and they would soon make the Warner Bros. film, "Mister Roberts," in 1955 -- a nice association piece between a major Hollywood actor and a major Hollywood director. (Please note left and bottom margins of letter are torn as a postscript was possibly removed; the envelope has paper loss on the left side where it was opened.)
