Hughes used Roscoe Turner's Sikorsky S-29 as a stand-in for a German bomber in his 1930 United Artists film, "Hell's Angels," in addition to hiring him as a stunt pilot for the complex aerial scenes. This 1932 image of Hughes with his H-1 racer, along with such an uncommon inscription, stands as a unique gesture of respect from one aviator to another.
