The Society of American Magicians, the oldest fraternal magic organization in the world, was originally founded in 1902 at Martinka's Magic Shop in New York. It was during Harry Houdini's leadership as president from 1917-1926 that the society expanded nationally. The secretary, Oscar S. Teale, was a magician specializing in "phenomenal magic;" he worked closely with Houdini as a psychical researcher, exposing frauds in that field.
