Description

A Clark Gable Mysterious Handwritten Letter, 1929. Penned in black fountain pen ink on both sides of a folded piece of crème-colored stationery, dated "Nov 20, 1929," addressed to "Dear Sir," the then 28 year-old writes in part: "I am asking / you a very unusual / question.../I fully / appreciate the length / of time since this happened / I would like to know / as near as possible the / hour of my birth...my name / is Clark Gable /...you attended my mother in / Cadiz, Ohio and she died there / a few months after my birth. / I was born Feb 1, 1901.../ Yours truly / Clark Gable / 140 East 81 / Apt 11-B / New York / N.Y.;" the doctor's response is penned in ink and pencil on the lower left side of the letter and reads in full: "Feb. 1, 1901 / 5:30 a.m / Jms S. Campbell, M.D. / Cadiz, / Ohio" (the doctor obviously having mailed the letter back to Gable); interesting to speculate why the young Gable wanted to know this information -- perhaps he was having his astrological natal chart done? (Please note there is heavy staining and mold evident on the letter but it is still legible.)
