A Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, Irving Thalberg, and Other Cast Members Unique Signed Book "Mutiny on the Bounty," 1935. Hardcover, by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, later 1934 printing, no dustjacket, owned by Dick Winslow, the then 20 year-old actor who portrayed "Tinkler" in the multiple Academy Award-nominated 1935 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film; Winslow, an amazingly talented artist, sketched detailed black pen and ink drawings in the front and back pages of the book including: 1) on the front free end pages a 'cast listing' of the character names where he then had the actors sign their names in blue fountain pen ink including (in order of signature): Charles Laughton, Clark Gable, Dudley Digges, Ivan F. Simpson, Ian Wolf, Wallis Clark, DeWitt Jennings, John Harrington, Percy Waram, Herbert Mundin, Sam W. Driscoll, Eddie Quilan, Stanley Fields, Donald Crisp, Charles Irwin, Byron Russell, Alec Craig, Pat Flaherty, David Thursby, John Power, Hal Le Sueur, and King Mojave; 2) on another front free end page a 'scroll' with the blue fountain pen ink signatures of (in order): Franchot Tone, Douglas Walton, Vernon Downing, Dick Winslow, and "Robt." Livingston; 3) on the title page a 'profile portrait' of the main star in costume titled "Clark / Gable / as / Fletcher / Christian" with Gable's black fountain pen ink inscription next to it reading "To Dick / Words cannot / express my sincere / appreciation / Thanks / Clark; 4) on the dedication page a 'portrait' of the co-star titled "Charles / Laughton / Cap't Bligh" with the actor's black fountain pen ink inscription next to it reading "To Dick / In memory of / the rolling ocean / a tall ship / and a bellyful / of the (illegible) / CL," glued above drawing is a faux moustache that Laughton likely wore on screen; 5) on the last front free end page a 'portrait' of "Ye Director / Frank Lloyd" with his lengthy black foutain pen ink inscription next to it; additionally, the back free end pages have further detailed drawings and signatures of "Ye Staff" and "Ye Crew" with the main standout being "Mr. Irving Thalberg" whose black fountain pen ink inscription reads "To Midshipman / Tinkler / I Thalberg;" a few more sketches and signatures are also included within the book, but are of behind-the-scenes people; also, a magazine cut-out glued to one of the front pages shows Gable holding this exact book as he signs it! Overall, this is a really charming piece from this all-time classic film that won a 'Best Picture' Academy Award. (Please note the binding is in very poor condition and the blue cloth covers are quite tattered due to age, but the interior pages are still intact and in good condition.)
