Description

A Bette Davis and a Joan Crawford Pair of Signed Contracts for "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Warner Bros., 1962; The first for Davis, five pages, typed, titled "Memorandum of Agreement," dated "9th day of May, 1962," outlining the terms the star had to "enact the role of Baby Jane," her pay noted as "$60,000," funnily, paragraph 11 is crossed out and initialed in blue fountain pen ink ["B.D."] as it related to "Credits" -- evidently Davis did not agree to "co-star billing with Joan Crawford on all titles...(or) both names (to) always be of the same size, type and importance," initialed three times by the star plus signed by her on the last page in blue fountain pen ink on the right side "Bette Davis," further signed above that by producer and director Robert Aldrich; the second for Joan Crawford, four pages, typed (but the carbon copy version), also titled a "Memorandum of Agreement," same date as Davis', outlining the terms the star had to "enact the role of Blanche," her pay noted as "$30,000" (half of Davis' pay!), paragraph 4 noting how Crawford could choose a "first-class cameraman," initialed once by the star plus signed by her on the last page in blue ballpoint ink "Joan Crawford," also signed above by Aldrich; this now huge cult classic resulted in Davis getting an Oscar nomination for 'Best Actress in a Leading Role' and it was also the inspiration (55 years later) for the recent FX TV miniseries, "Feud: Bette and Joan" -- that series resulting in both leads [Susan Sarandon as "Bette Davis" and Jessica Lange as "Joan Crawford"] getting nominated for Emmys for 'Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie' -- though they both got robbed as it went to Nicole Kidman for HBO's "Big Little Lies!" (Please note each page has two-hole punch marks on the top margin and Crawford's pages are somewhat tattered around the edges.)
