A John Wayne Annotated Script from "The Shootist." Paramount, 1976. Plain gray front and back covers (with coffee ring stains on the front one), no authorship noted, no date noted, 117 pages, with numerous annotations by Wayne penned in black felt tip ink throughout, mainly slight revisions, questions about the plot, or dislike of dialogue such as: on page 3 "old timer / Books smiles / Gillom don't think you scared him too much;" on page 12 "Why not?" (next to a statement about the word 'cancer' not being used) and "Bullshit" (next to a scene between Books and Thibido); on the verso of page 15 "One time in / room for feeling / of inability to find other / quarters;" on page 25 "Let Books decide / how to use them;" on page 65 "Don't I know?" (next to dialogue where Books asks about the best saloon in town); on page 95 "Crap / Nuts / Ruin last / scene" (next to dialogue between Mrs. Rogers and Books), and other like notes which illustrate how Wayne approached a film role when first reading a script. (Please note the covers and interior pages are stained and yellowed due to age and two metal brads are missing.)
    11" x 9" x 1"

The current owner inherited this script from his uncle, Robert Metz, who received it as a gift directly from John Wayne himself; Metz was a professional pilot who flew Wayne to and from the actor's film sets for a number of years and the two men developed a friendly rapport.
