Description

"Bob's Big Boy" outdoor statue. The original "Bob's Big Boy" restaurant was built in Burbank, California in 1949. It was designed by Los Angeles architect Wayne McAllister incorporating the 1940s transitional design of streamline Moderne Style, while foreshadowing 1950s coffee shop "Googie" architecture. Innovating the "drive-through" concept brought many Hollywood celebrities of the day including Bob Hope, who appreciated the privacy a drive-though afforded him. Even the Beatles stopped in in 1965. But the chain is best known for its trademark chubby boy in red-and-white checkered overalls holding a Big Boy sandwich. The inspiration for Big Boy's name, as well as the model for its mascot, was Richard Woodruff, who at six years old, walked into the diner as Bob Wian was attempting to name his new hamburger. Wian said, "Hello, Big Boy" and the name stuck. Warner Bros., animation artist Ben Washman sketched Woodruff and that caricature became the company trademark. This "Big Boy" figure consists of a 75 x 43 in. statue including 30 x 30 x 20 in. base. Hollow-cast, heavy fiberglass shell painted in industrial enamel automotive paint for durability and weather resistance. It was placed outside of Bob's Big Boy restaurant as a familiar iconic greeter and friendly presence. Exhibiting minor signs of wear. In fine condition. Special shipping arrangements will apply.
