Description

Charlie Chaplin Signed Document. Here is the signature page of the declaration of trust relating to the divorce of Charles and Lillita (Lita Grey) Chaplin and the subsequent property settlement, dated September 27, 1935. Slightly creased, with a half-inch tear to the right margin and the usual staple holes in the upper left corner. Overall, in fine condition. Also included is a 5" x 3" postcard from the Clerk's Office, District Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, State of California, addressed to George B. Bush, Los Angeles, notifying him, in print and type, that the case of Chaplin vs. Chaplin "has been ordered on the calendar for hearing and oral argument in San Diego August 15, 1935, at 10 o'clock A.M." Lightly soiled. Punch-hole at upper blank area. Lita and Charlie were married in 1924, and had two sons, Charles, Jr. and Sydney before divorcing in 1927. This 1935 document refers to their two sons, then ages ten and nine. In "My Autobiography" Chaplin writes: "During the filming of 'The Gold Rush' I married for the second time. Because we have two grown sons of whom I am very fond, I will not go into any details. For two years we were married and tried to make a go of it, but it was hopeless and ended in a great deal of bitterness." With COA from PSA/DNA.
