    Description

Warren Newcombe (1894-1960) Academy Award Winning American Special Effects Artist: Large Archive of Over 150 Photographs of His Mattes Bound in a Large Binder Marked "NEWCOMBE SHOTS" (1931-1932). Each black-and-white photograph measures approximately 12.5" x 9.5" (with a few 13" x 6.25") and each bear the "NEWCOMBE SHOT" ink stamp on the verso. The photos are mounted on the recto and verso of album pages and bound in a large contemporary binder. The front board and spine are hand-titled in black ink "NEWCOMBE / SHOTS / 3". Though more thorough research will ultimately identify the specific movies these scenes came from, some are obvious and include many photos from "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932), Lovers Courageous (1932), Polly of the Circus (1932), among very many others. The photos will provide hours of fascinating research and they chronicle the artistry of Newcombe's team and their pioneering work in special effects.

Newcombe worked on more than 200 films in his career including Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) The Mask of Fu Machu (1932), Billy the Kid (1935), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941), Mrs. Miniver (1942), Gaslight (1944), Kismet (1944), National Velvet (1944), The Three Musketeers (1948), Little Women (1949), Annie Get Your Gun (1950), Show Boat (1951), An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), The Prisoner of Zenda (1952), Kiss Me Kate (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), Brigadoon (1954), and Forbidden Planet (1956). He won Academy Awards for photographic effects for Mrs. Miniver in 1943 and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo in 1945. Very Good to Excellent condition, with paper loss in the binder, detaching photos from binders, along with soiling and wear on the edges of the photos.
