Tom Petty Stage Played 1965 Gibson SG Cherry Electric Guitar and Hat Worn on Stage and in Traveling Wilburys Music Videos.

Here is an awe-inspiring set of items used on stage by late Rock icon Tom Petty! First up is a beautiful early 1965 Gibson SG electric guitar, serial number 275535, with a gorgeous cherry finish, played on stage by Petty when he and the Heartbreakers were a part of Bob Dylan's 1987 True Confessions Tour. The instrument has been signed "Tom Petty / '88" by the beloved music legend in silver paint, and includes an 8" x 10" black and white glossy photo of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty - holding this guitar - on stage together, with a note on the verso in black felt pen, in Petty's own hand, reading "This was my SG on Dylan Tour '87 / Tom Petty". Includes hard case.

Guitar condition report: Early '65 SG Standard with wider neck profile. Pickup covers have been removed. hardware is a mix of chrome and nickel as seen in this transition year. Electronics are original and untampered with. Visible pots dated late 1964. Original frets show light wear from moderate play. Markings on volume and tone knobs have been added to show preferred settings. Pearloid inlay on face of headstock is a dead-on match to guitar in performance photo. Original finish has normal checking, with some light scuffing to back of body. Minor nicks on headstock edges. Beautiful condition overall.

The second, equally impressive piece in this lot is one of Petty's famous hats - a custom-made brown felt hat, size 7 1/4, from Baron California Hats, worn by Petty on stage, as well as in two Traveling Wilburys music videos ("Handle With Care" and "End of the Line"), and during a 1989 MTV news segment in which the remaining Wilburys were interviewed on the death of Roy Orbison. Signed fully on the inside lining in black felt pen. Fine condition, with minor wear. Also included are a 3" x 4.5" laminated color photo depicting Petty wearing the hat on stage and 4" x 6" photo showing the icon in the studio, grasping a Gibson SG bass. The man definitely had an affinity for SGs! COA from Heritage Auctions. LOP from Norman Harris.

Norman Harris on both pieces: "In regards to the Gibson SG Standard (Red) Bob Dylan Tour Guitar, Tom was after a guitar that was in my first book, which was a Rickenbacker Double Bound 360 12 String with F-Holes which is considered a Rose Morris guitar. Rose Morris was the distributor in Great Britain for all Rickenbacker guitars. The guitar appeared in my first book, Norman's Rare Guitars - 30 Years of Collecting Guitars. Tom did the forward to this book. When Tom saw the Rickenbacker in the book, he had asked me to sell him the guitar. I was not ready to sell it immediately, but promised Tom that he would get the guitar. Tom would call every few months asking me to sell him the guitar. Finally I told Tom that I would trade him for some of his stage played memorabilia. I had previously sold Tom the SG Standard and requested that that would be part of the trade. I knew that he played it on the Bob Dylan tour and thought this would be a good guitar to have back. The Rickenbacker was extremely rare and in near mint condition. When Tom received the Rickenbacker, it became his favorite guitar. He used the guitar when he played at the Super Bowl. The guitar also had an original receipt from Hessey's Music in Liverpool. This is where the Beatles bought a lot of their original equipment. Because Tom was such a fan of the Beatles, this guitar really meant a lot to him. On numerous occasions, Tom thanked me for the Rickenbacker and told me this was his number one favorite guitar.

The top hat was a hat that he wore when touring with Bob Dylan in 1987-88. I asked Tom for clothes to make a package with the Gibson SG and Tom thought the hat was the most appropriate piece. Tom signed the inside of the hat. This is one of the most iconic pieces of Tom Petty clothing and is highly associated with him. Tom knew at some point that Norm would sell the SG and the Top Hat so he signed both to assist Norm.

Both of these things could have been sold years ago, but because I felt these were very special Tom Petty pieces, he hung on to them for years. I probably would never have sold them, but at 69 years old, I feel it's time for somebody else to enjoy these great pieces of memorabilia."
