Tom Petty Played and Signed 1963 White Gibson SG Junior Electric Guitar, Serial #100636. Offered here is a white 1963 Gibson SG Junior that was loaned to Tom Petty, who played the guitar during rehearsals for his 2012 world tour. Just before the tour was to begin, Petty had several of his personal guitars stolen. He then asked Norm Harris of Norman's Rare Guitars for a loaner, and Norm sent this beauty. Within weeks Tom's stolen guitars were returned, but in the meantime, this SG served as his rehearsal instrument. When Tom returned the guitar just before the tour, it was signed "Tom Petty" on the body in black felt pen. Also included is a handwritten note from Tom Petty on his own stationery, reading in full: "I played this guitar in the Spring of 2012 when mine was stolen. Tom Petty".

This guitar is in all original condition. It has a somewhat rare Maestro vibrola which appears to be factory installed. Original frets show light to moderate play wear. Original custom color white finish has normal checking, with some slight yellowing to the clear coat. Black pickguard exhibits cracking from shrinkage, with lower tip missing at screw hole. Finish shows cracking and scuffing from age and play on reverse of body. Good condition. Includes original hard case with soft plush lining. COA from Heritage Auctions. LOP from Norman Harris.

Norman Harris on the 1963 Gibson SG Junior: "The Gibson SG Jr. Custom Color White was a guitar in my personal collection. Tom had a white SG Jr. similar to this guitar that was stolen from him at a rehearsal studio in Culver City California. When Tom discovered that his guitar was stolen, he immediately called me to ask if I had something similar, because he liked the guitar very much. I went to my warehouse, and brought the guitar over to Tom's rehearsal studio, and Tom was going to buy the guitar. Shortly thereafter, the guitars that were stolen from Tom were discovered at a pawn shop in Hollywood. It turns out that a security guard from the rehearsal establishment had stolen the guitars and sold them to this pawn shop. When Tom recovered his guitars, he thanked Norm for the SG and told him that he would return it to him. He used the guitar for several months and when he gave the guitar back, he wrote out a note on his letterhead saying that the guitar was on loan to him while he was trying to recover his guitars. The note is hand written by Tom on his special letterhead."
