Thelonious Monk / Nina Simone 1960 New York Town Hall Jazz Handbill. An original yellow-paper advertising flyer for a star-studded jazz show at New York's Town Hall on Saturday, March 26, 1960. The talent line-up consisted of Nina Simone, Max Roach, Sonny Stitt, Jackie McLean, Kenny Dorham and "the genius of jazz, Thelonious Monk & his fabulous band."

Three months after this Town Hall engagement, Nina Simone recorded the biggest album of her career, Nina At Newport, at the Newport Jazz Festival. It rose to #23 on Billboard magazine's mainstream LP chart, an unusual accomplishment for a jazz album. (By comparison, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue from the year before didn't even chart.)

And this engagement fell one month before Thelonious Monk recorded a live album, too, in San Francisco, Thelonious Monk at the Blackhawk, for the Riverside label. We can assume Monk had the same band with him on this occasion: Charlie Rouse and Harold Land on tenor saxophones, Joe Gordon on trumpet, John Ore on bass and Billy Higgins on drums.

Measures 5 ½" x 8 ½" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition with only the tiniest possible rounded & creased upper right corner and an extremely light horizontal crease that runs through "World-Famous Quintet," but you won't see it for the first few minutes you're holding this handbill. COA from Heritage Auctions.
