Jimi Hendrix / Janis Joplin / The Who - 1967 LARGE Monterey Pop Festival Poster (AOR-3.5). Original large-format poster designed by Tom Wilkes and printed on silver foil stock to advertise the seminal three-day festival on June 16-18, 1967. Collectors know that this is the toughie; the smaller format version was a 'merch' poster sold at the show as a souvenir, sometimes doubling as advertising. But this larger version was produced in small quantities and used for advertising only, with most being discarded after the weekend was over; thus its rarity.

Many music fans and historians consider this to likely be the greatest weekend in rock-music history, even eclipsing Woodstock two years later. Officially kicking off the Summer of Love, the weekend's talent line-up was simply stunning, most notably for launching the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding, all of whom put on spellbinding performances. The long weekend also featured performances by the Grateful Dead, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, the Mamas and the Papas, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Buffalo Springfield, Simon & Garfunkel, the Butterfield Blues Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Byrds, Laura Nyro and even sitarist extraordinaire Ravi Shankar. And we've left out a good number of others. It was all captured in a theatrical motion picture by D.A. Pennebaker, immortalizing the weekend forever. Measures 19" x 34" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.258 (illustrated).

More Information: For this poster, Very Good condition is an outstanding grade given that most existing examples of this large advertising version are pretty beat-up, faded and otherwise significantly damaged. Seemingly nobody stored one away hot off the press in 1967; there was a big festival to advertise, so all of them got used and, therefore, exposed to the elements and lots of human handling.

Silver foil-like finish is very susceptible to surface creasing, and there's a few throughout this specimen, especially in the margins. Strongest are ‘half-moon' creases in the margins to the left and right of the top date, and again in the margin to the right of the woman's neck; this probably happened when someone tried to pick it up carelessly. A few other creases are scattered around the poster's perimeter. There are also about five surface creases in the top date lettering, and about the same amount total in the rolling blue lettering. There's a bit of light surface scuffing on the woman's body and again in the blue lettering. Lower right corner has an extra crease from a ding.

Regarding pinholes, there are none in the upper corners, but instead in the upper left margins about 4" down on either side. They are also present in the margins halfway down the poster; one on the left and two on the right. There is also one in the lower left corner, but none in the lower right area.

Most of this condition information was gleaned by examining the poster at an angle to the light. It's definitely a solid, excellent specimen of a key poster that is never found mint.

The movie quite literally changed my life. I have included a pic of me in Sly's Rocky 3 Cashmere overcoat, would much appreciate if it is possible for you to forward this email to Sly to let him know the overcoat is in good hands, and will be well taken care of, (as will be the Rambo knife forging tools, the other lot I won!) Wish you very happy holidays and a great 2016!
