A MASTERPIECE HAND-SIGNED BY THE MASTER

Grateful Dead 1969 Classic "Aoxomoxoa" Concert Poster Signed by Artist Rick Griffin (AOR 2.24). For the first time in Heritage Auctions' history, we're extremely pleased to be offering a pre-concert first printing of the Grateful Dead's legendary Aoxomoxoa concert poster hand-signed by its creator, Rick Griffin.

This is truly among the most legendary of psychedelic concert posters from the 1960's, surely one of the 10 most popular posters from that decade and very possibly in most people's top 5. How many concert posters were so great back then that they were turned into album covers? (Fortuitously, we have the famous Santana 'lion's head' poster in this sale as well.)

You just can't say enough about Rick Griffin's iconic Aoxomoxoa concert poster, created to advertise a weekend of shows at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in late January 1969, promoted by Soundproof Productions. (Opening for the Dead were the Sons of Champlin and Initial Shock.). The esteemed book The Art of Rock gave this poster the biggest full-page image it possibly could, leaving everything else off the page, including its plate number, the only poster in the book to receive such royal treatment.

The symbolism found in Griffin's art is legion and legendary. It surely was a stoner's delight in 1969 to gaze at the poster endlessly, finding new images and meaning each time. Young people today are equally as enthralled with the art, with its roots in Far Eastern mysticism and such. It's truly a masterwork.

Griff himself authorized reprintings of this poster, but the true collector and investor insists on a first, pre-concert printing, and to have it hand-signed by its creator is a rare cherry on the cake, because we lost Mr. Griffin almost 30 years ago, so he's not signing any more.

Poster measures 21 3/4" x 26 1/4" and is graded Near Mint Minus. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster has a slightly nudged & whitened lower left corner. Has about three vertical light-crease lines in the red around Initial Shock but looking very much like a printer's flaw, not caused by handling. The tiniest amount of red-edge-whitening in the bottom center under the scarab and in the lower right corner. Very light, invisible surface creases in upper left area in the yellow border above the tip of red wing; and a little bit in the sky-blue area to both the left and right areas of the poster's center. Very slight surface ‘gouge' nick in the dark blue and orange margin in upper right above second "D" in "Dead," and lower left red margin under "J" in "January." An even lighter one going from the dark blue into "Dead" word at the top. Almost all of these, btw, are visible only when closely examining while tilting the poster in the light. One inch of extremely light perhaps tape residue (not sticky at all) under scarab's butt in the bottom dead center.
