Accompanied by original (9" x 4"; 229 mm x 102 mm) transmittal envelope, postmarked from Los Angeles, CA., 26 Dec. 1967, written in Lee's hand, Mr. Bob Baker / 15253 Corbett Ct. / San Leandro. / Calif. [struck through] and 28625 Rochelle Ave. / Hayward, Cal. 94544. Expected folds with minor stains and handling.

After Bruce Lee left college in Washington in 1964, he moved to Oakland and lived with legendary martial artist and mentor James Yimm Lee. There they founded a Jun Fan martial arts studio together. It was during this period that Bruce Lee developed his formidable skills and was introduced to other influential figures by James Lee. It was in 1964 when Bruce Lee performed his legendary "one inch punch" on volunteer Bob Baker who would become a student and ultimately friend and confidante throughout Bruce Lee's life. In this 1967 letter, Bruce asks Bob to help arrange a surprise party for his mentor James. Lee will fly in with Ted Wong, private student and sparring partner, who became a very close friend of Bruce's.

Bruce Lee opens stating, "there will be a surprise party for James Lee on the 26th of Jan. (Friday)" and he would be flying in for the event. He continues to by telling Bob to quietly notify James Lee's Fremont martial arts students that there would be no class that night and to be discreet "as some are not invited". Of utmost importance for Bruce is the surprise element, needing "to get James Lee into a restaurant without him suspecting a thing."
