HOW MANY POSTERS GET TURNED INTO AN ALBUM COVER?

BG-134 Grateful Dead, Santana, Steppenwolf Famous "Lion's Head" Concert Poster Signed by Lee Conklin. First-printing San Francisco concert poster of one of the most famous, popular and enduring images to emerge from the psychedelic poster scene of the 1960's. So popular that Santana appropriated the poster's central artwork for their debut album cover the following year, turning the already highly admired art into legend.

This poster performed double duty, advertising two sets of shows. To the left of the lion you had Steppenwolf, whose first hit, "Born to Be Wild," was the #2 record in the country right now; plus the venerable Staple Singers and that unknown local rookie blues-rock band led by a Hispanic guitarist, Santana. Those shows were on weeknights from August 27-29. For the weekend, on the lion's right, naturally the Grateful Dead led the charge, whose second album, Anthem of the Sun, was entering Billboard's album chart this very week. They were supported by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Sons of Champlin, the latter misspelled by a letter.

It's a poster for the ages, no question about it, and we're psyched to be offering it beautifully signed in silver by its creator. We've sold this poster 10 times before, but this is the very first time in Heritage's history that we've had one signed by the esteemed Mr. Conklin.

Measures 14" x 21" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Light crease in the lower right corner area. All first runs of this poster had two or more factory creases coming down into the poster from the top edge; this has two. The first one, white, starting just to the left of "Bill Graham." The second one, an almost invisible black, much smaller and shorter, coming down from the second "C" in "Francisco."

Poster's verso has a brown stain at the very top, not visible at all on the front; and the numbers "135" written down at the bottom.
