Beatles - Astrid Kirchherr Rare "Teneriffa '63" Limited Edition Photo Portfolio. As one of, if not the most photographed Pop group in the history of popular music, the Beatles redefined not only the sound, but the visual aesthetic of Rock and Roll. German photographer Astrid Kirchherr is a name heavily associated with the Fab Four, as she met them shortly after their arrival in Hamburg in August, 1960. Instantly attracted to their magnetic personalities and rough greaser look, Kirchherr fell in love with Stuart Sutcliffe, original bass player of the band. Following Sutcliffe's departure from the Beatles, and subsequent death, and Pete Best being replaced by Ringo, Astrid stayed in friendly contact with them, going on to photograph them for this very set.

After a breakneck schedule of touring, recording, and television appearances, in April of 1963, the Beatles took 12 days off for some fun in the sun. John Lennon and manager Brian Epstein journeyed to Spain, while Paul, George and Ringo - in the company of Kirchherr and friend Klaus Voorman - ventured to Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, staying at the Voorman family home located there. These rarely seen photographs show the three Beatles, with Astrid, relaxing by a pool near the ocean, free from the immense pressure of Beatlemania, a new, but powerful force that had just been unleashed at home. Taken with Astrid's portable Rolleicord camera in glorious color, the candid images preserve a turning point in the history of the Beatles, as it may have been one of the final times they were free to be in public without recognition and ardent, screaming fandom. Their first taste of fame had been experienced, and there would be no going back, ever.

Titled "Teneriffa '63," this rare portfolio dates to October 17, 1985 - the first and only time the color Tenerife photos were produced in a professional edition from the original negatives by Astrid Kirchherr. Originally envisioned as an edition of 100, only 15 portfolios were ever produced, and only a few - including this one - were sold as complete, unbroken sets. Each of the 11 included prints is approximately 11.5" x 8", with the color images measuring approximately 7.75" x 7.75". Each print is signed by Kirchherr and numbered 3/100, and also included is a signed, dated, and wax-sealed certificate from the photographer. In Excellent condition, with the exterior of the green cardboard portfolio cover exhibiting the slightest loss of color due to age.
