THE GREATEST BEACH BOYS CONCERT POSTER EVER

Beach Boys 1963 Sacramento, CA Jumbo Florescent Green Concert Poster. A terrific window card from the summer of 1963 advertising the Beach Boys in concert at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in California's state capitol on Saturday, September 14, 1963 - the very week "Surfer Girl" entered the national Top 10 singles chart.

This poster has more bells & whistles than almost any vintage rock poster you could conjure up. Great photo of the boys top & center, great coloring with blue print on a Day-Glo green background, seven terrific song titles from their earliest era, nice and big jumbo size, and amazing wording down below. Check out the details... a "Young Teeners Matinee" for only $1.25, and "Parents Admitted Free with Child"? Really? And wow, the most expensive ticket on the poster is just $2.00. How about, "25 Beach Boys Capitol Albums Given Away FREE Each Show." Ah, the lovely old innocent days!

This beautiful board measures 19 ½" x 28" and is graded in Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This was Brian Wilson & Co. still in their suits-and-skinny-ties phase, still in their David Marks era before Al Jardine would return to the group for good. Wait – Al already had, so these shows actually had both Jardine and Marks present in the group.

The Beach Boys "broke" out of Sacramento, CA, largely at the hand of local promoter Fred Vail, a legendary figure in Beach Boys lore. Being approximately the same age, Vail and the young group meshed perfectly upon first meeting. He brought them up from Southern California on numerous occasions, where they would sell out Sac concerts before that started to happen everywhere else. And the Memorial Auditorium was their favored venue. Three months later, they'd record a live album there which became their first #1 LP. Vail's introduction of the group kicks off the album, and his name is at the top of this poster. Synchronicity!

Oh, and did we mention rarity? This is the very first time that Heritage is proudly able to offer this poster for sale. The few lucky collectors who have one of these always hang onto it.

Condition details: Graded Very Good Plus due to a pair of horizontal creases down in the ticket information. The bigger one stretches all the way across the poster and is, fortuitously, mostly between two lines of words, under "2 Giant Fun-Filled Shows," until it finally dips down into lettering on "$1.25." The second, smaller crease doesn't reach the two margins but starts at "Fair Oaks Blvd.", rises up above "1419 H Street" and peters out under "South Gate Records." Creases cause a little more green to be broken down in extreme lower left corner and above "Capitol" at the very bottom, and some blue & green around the "S" in the "Beach Boys" headline. Also some general toning around the four margins, and tiny, unobtrusive light brown spotting in the lower right margin area and even in the Beach Boys' photo a tad. The poster's upper left corner was repaired and restored, after being torn back in the day by a thumbtack.
