Description
A Stunning Hollywood-Themed Oil Painting by Salvador Tarazona, 1930. Rendered on canvas, depicting an evocative image of the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles as movie stars stand in front of it while klieg lights shine above; displaying the A List actors of the day in very idealized form including (in order of appearance from left to right): Katharine Hepburn, Charles Boyer, Charlie Chaplin, Sid Grauman (theatre builder/owner), Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, George Raft, Gary Cooper, Delores del Rio, Greta Garbo, Claudette Colbert, William Powell, Clara Bow, Wallace Beery, Adolph Menjou, Kay Francis, Ronald Colman, Cary Grant, Harold Lloyd, Myrna Loy, and Lon Chaney plus a few other unidentified ones; signed in the lower left corner "S. Tarazona," housed in an ornate gilt wood frame with a placard reading "Hollywood 1930 / Salvador Tarazona, Mexico" -- overall, a moody and beautiful piece illuminating early Hollywood. (Please note there is slight paint cracking evident, somewhat affecting certain images of the actors.)Framed: 42" x 60"; Work Only: 31" x 49"
This is an important work by the Spanish born muralist Salvador Tarazona who died in 1961. Tarazona began his career in Spain and contributed to the decoration of the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris Exposition of 1900. He emigrated to Mexico in 1904 and became known as a muralist, working mainly in Mexico City, decorating public buildings and theaters. During the Mexican Revolution, he emigrated to the United States and worked as a Broadway set designer. The present painting is from the Estate of legendary Pennsylvania dealer and "Antiques Roadshow" expert, Richard Wright, who passed away in 2009 at age 62. This painting hung for many years in Wright's Florida home as a centerpiece of his personal collection. Most of The Richard Wright Collection of Decorative Arts will be offered in Heritage's Estate Auction in Dallas on June 20th, 2015.
