A Mae West Massive and Important Archive of Documents, 1920s-1970s. Housed in six white bankers boxes; extensive collection of paperwork (and other assorted items) covering six decades of the star's life, both professionally and personally, none of which has ever before been seen by the public; contents include: film scripts, theatre scripts, typed biographical documents (with West really ripping into poor Mickey Hargitay in a few funny pages), movie call sheets, store receipts, utility bills, playbills, programs, postcards, telegrams, reel-to-reel tapes (content unknown!), cassette recordings, dozens of fan letters, dozens of personal letters (including some juicy ones from jilted lovers - just the kind of thing you'd expect West would have received), contracts, business correspondence, miniature black and white publicity headshots, business cards, and the like; overall, a clear portrait of the star's career and private life can be gleaned from reading all these fascinating documents, though it would take months to go through all the contents; also included are a number of documents related to West's sister, Beverly [born Mildred Katherine West] who was a performer as well. Please note our catalogue illustration does not do justice to this comprehensive and varied lot; included with a signed 'Letter of Provenance' from John West, Mae's nephew.
