Description
TPS Luna Hovercraft X-1, Magic Color Moon Express, & Mercury Explorer Battery-Operated Tin Toys (Toplay, 1970). This three-piece Toplay group represents the late-era Japanese shift toward lightweight materials, visual effects, and novelty motion, all documented in the 1970 Tokyo Playthings catalog. The Luna Hovercraft X-1 is the aluminum-bodied remote-control hovercraft variant, sharing its design with the Flying Air Car and designed to lift via an internal fan. The Magic Color Moon Express is a red lithographed tin space train with a white color-changing dome at the nose, a clear red plastic rear motor housing, and a domed pilot compartment, using bump-and-go action. The Mercury Explorer completes the trio with a hovercraft-style profile, spinner mechanism, and Magic Color dome mounted above an orange plastic collar, continuing Toplay's emphasis on visual motion and illumination. Mild scuffing, scratches, oxidation, and edge wear are present across all three toys. The plastic pieces show surface scuffing but no obvious cracking or broken pieces. The Moon Express shows wear to lithography and light deformation along edges. The Luna Hovercraft's remote has little signs of use outside of some scratches to the exterior. Boxes show significant wear, including creasing, crushed corners, staining, and tearing, though all remain intact and identifiable. Additionally, the Mercury Explorer box has a hole in the front. These items are untested, and no guarantee can be made regarding their working conditions. A compelling opportunity to acquire distinctive Toplay space toys with their original boxes.Toplay (TPS) was a Japanese tin toy manufacturer active primarily during the 1950s and 1960s, producing toys for export during the height of Japan's postwar tin toy industry. The company is best known for lithographed tin space vehicles, robots, and novelty toys, often friction- or battery-operated, and typically marked TPS or Toplay. TPS toys are recognized for their bold graphics, imaginative space themes, and straightforward but visually engaging mechanical actions.
