Description

Major Matt Mason Space Station (Mattel, 1966). The Major Matt Mason Space Station, released by Mattel in 1966, is a key playset in the Major Matt Mason toy line, designed to capture the excitement of space exploration during the height of the Space Race. The Space Station serves as a central base for Major Matt Mason and his astronaut team, featuring a modular design with multiple components that could be rearranged to create various configurations, enhancing playability and fostering creativity. The playset includes distinctive elements such as a rotating radar dish, communication consoles, and working airlocks that mimicked a futuristic space base. Its bright colors and detailed features aligned with the retro-futuristic aesthetic of the line. The Space Station was constructed with durable plastic and included decals for added realism, representing cutting-edge space technology as imagined in the 1960s. The Space Station comes in the original bi-lingual box with French and English text, displaying handling wear along the edges and corners, with creasing and scuffing. The box has yellowed over the years and shows additional surface wear along the front top and bottom edges with sticker residue in the center top. The back of the box has horizontal creasing next to the opening tab, with wear along the bottom edge. The box is listed as "Made in Canada" on the back, which is a distinguishing feature from the U.S. version's box. The Space Station remains a highly sought-after item, cherished for its innovative design, nostalgic appeal, and connection to the era's fascination with space exploration.
