Description

G.I. Joe Firefly 2-Up Hand-Painted Preproduction Prototype (Hasbro, 1984). This Firefly 2-Up preproduction prototype represents a critical step in the development of one of Cobra's most enigmatic operatives. Introduced in 1984 as a saboteur and explosives expert with a deliberately obscured identity, Firefly quickly became a standout character within the A Real American Hero line. Sculpted at twice the scale of the final 3.75-inch figure, this resin prototype was cast from the original sculpt and used as a paint master. Pieces at this scale were used in conjunction with pantograph machinery to translate the sculpt into steel tooling at production size, preserving the original detail for mass manufacture. Hand-painted by Hasbro artists, the grey camouflage pattern and Cobra insignia seen here closely match the final retail release, offering a direct look at the approved design just prior to production. As typical of 2-Ups from this era, the figure is constructed in multiple components but is not functional as an articulated toy, with joints fixed in place by glue and paint. This lot comes from the Derryl DePriest collection and is accompanied by a COA signed by Derryl DePriest. An exceptional piece from the formative years of the A Real American Hero line, this Firefly 2-Up captures the moment where character design was finalized, preserving the quieter, more tactical visual identity that defined Firefly's original incarnation.

More Information: The right arm has detached at the shoulder and is present; the piece remains in excellent condition with clean paint application and intact structural elements throughout.

Derryl DePriest is a longtime toy industry executive and pop culture historian who served as Vice President of Global Brand Management at Hasbro from 2001 to 2018, overseeing major initiatives for Star Wars and G.I. A lifelong G.I. Joe enthusiast and recognized liaison between Hasbro and the collector community, DePriest later authored Star Wars: The Vintage Collection Archive Edition and has contributed extensively to documenting the history of G.I. Joe. Items offered from his collection reflect the perspective of an executive who helped guide some of the most influential collector-driven brands of the modern era.
