Description
G.I. Joe Defiant AFA Q75 (Hasbro, 1987). The Defiant: Space Vehicle Launch Complex was released as a Series 6 vehicle in 1987 and remains one of the defining monuments of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero collecting, a sprawling space-shuttle launch system that pushed the line's military fantasy into full orbital ambition. The set includes the Defiant shuttle, booster, mobile crawler, and gantry platform, along with two exclusive figures: Payload, the astronaut, and Hardtop, the Crawler/Gantry driver. Sold again in 1988 and discontinued domestically in 1989, the Defiant became one of the line's most important late-1980s centerpieces, pairing the real-world drama of the space shuttle era with the oversized play-pattern ambition that made ARAH famous. From the Derryl DePriest Collection. The Defiant is one of those rare G.I. Joe releases that was not content to be a vehicle, base, or playset alone. It was all three at once, a launch complex with a mission stack, crew, ground support, and enough moving parts to make Mission Control look overworked. For ARAH collectors, it stands just behind the U.S.S. Flagg in sheer mythic weight, an enormous and fragile survivor from the moment when Hasbro looked at the toy aisle and decided low Earth orbit was still within budget. Graded AFA 75 Q-EX+/NM, this example carries a Qualified grade from AFA and is accompanied by the original brown shipping sleeve. The Flagg ruled the seas, but the Defiant aimed higher, because apparently the only place left for G.I. Joe to deploy after conquering the living room floor was space.
More Information: Derryl DePriest is a longtime toy industry executive and pop culture historian who served as Vice President of Global Brand Management at Hasbro from 2001 to 2018, overseeing major initiatives for Star Wars and G.I. Joe during a transformative era for collector-focused product. During his tenure, Hasbro launched key lines including The Vintage Collection and the 6-inch Star Wars: The Black Series, both of which reshaped modern action figure presentation and articulation standards. A lifelong G.I. Joe enthusiast and recognized liaison between Hasbro and the collector community, DePriest later authored Star Wars: The Vintage Collection Archive Edition and has contributed extensively to documenting the history of G.I. Joe. Items offered from his collection reflect the perspective of an executive who helped guide some of the most influential collector-driven brands of the modern era.
