Description

G.I. Joe Star Brigade Armor Tech Cobra BAAT AFA 80+ ** Only 5 Graded Examples ** (Hasbro, 1993). The Cobra B.A.A.T. took the original Battle Android Trooper idea and pushed it into Armor Tech excess, turning Cobra's disposable robot infantry into a walking space tank with even less concern for judgment, restraint, or friendly fire. Released in Series 12 as part of the 1993 Star Brigade Armor Tech subset, the B.A.A.T. was redesigned for weapons and assault capability, with its programming narrowed to battle destruction and elimination of G.I. Joe forces. The card even frames the concept like a bulldozer bristling with missile launchers and assault rifles, which is about as close as Cobra ever came to honest product development. Originating from the collection of former Hasbro executive Derryl DePriest. Graded AFA 80+ NM with subgrades of C80 B80 F80, with only five graded examples listed on the population report. Cobra made the B.A.T.s bigger, dumber, and more heavily armed, then seemed surprised when they shot at anything that moved. Armor Tech did not fix the problem, it just gave the problem more armor.

More Information: Derryl DePriest is a longtime toy industry executive and pop culture historian who served as Vice President of Global Brand Management at Hasbro from 2001 to 2018, overseeing major initiatives for Star Wars and G.I. Joe during a transformative era for collector-focused product. During his tenure, Hasbro launched key lines including The Vintage Collection and the 6-inch Star Wars: The Black Series, both of which reshaped modern action figure presentation and articulation standards. A lifelong G.I. Joe enthusiast and recognized liaison between Hasbro and the collector community, DePriest later authored Star Wars: The Vintage Collection Archive Edition and has contributed extensively to documenting the history of G.I. Joe. Items offered from his collection reflect the perspective of an executive who helped guide some of the most influential collector-driven brands of the modern era.
