Description

GI Joe Adventure Team Dangerous Mission Original Packaging Artwork by Don Stivers (Hasbro, 1973). The G.I. Joe Adventure Team Dangerous Mission Set was a popular addition to Hasbro's 1970s Adventure Team series, designed to immerse G.I. Joe in action-packed, perilous scenarios far removed from traditional military settings. The focus of the Adventure Team line was on daring rescues, explorations, and missions in exotic and dangerous locations, and the Dangerous Mission Set captured this spirit perfectly. The Dangerous Mission Set provided endless storytelling possibilities. Kids could imagine G.I. Joe venturing deep into hostile territory, dodging natural disasters, and confronting wild animals or enemies. He would need to use his wit, bravery, and the tools at his disposal to complete his mission and return safely. Whether recovering valuable equipment, rescuing a team member, or retrieving a secret treasure, G.I. Joe's dangerous mission was always full of excitement and challenge. First released in 1973 and then again in 1974, the packaging was different with each release but used the same artwork.

The artist responsible for this and most other pieces of package art from the GI Joe Adventure Team series is Don Stivers (1926-2009). As Hasbro's primary GI Joe artist of the 1970's, Don's painting style perfectly showed the life and energy of each character with strong visualizations of surprise, determination, and focus. As a Navy Veteran of World War II, his extensive art catalog includes scenes from WWII, the Civil War, and the American West. His artwork is still displayed today at military museums and bases including the US Cavalry Museum, Army War College, and the Pentagon.

Measuring 8 7/8 by 13.5 inches, the artwork is painted in oil on illustration board, with the painted area measuring 5.75 by 12 inches at the top 2/3. The border of the board is the original white which shows guidelines, tape residue, and aging. "B 9208 D/S" is written below the painted art. In addition, there are traces of erased text in pencil and what looks to be a capital "E" crossed out. The reverse has no writing or marks.

The red sky and water behind the soldier with clouds and sun on the horizon casts the glow of sunset in the distance while the silhouette of palm trees signals a tropical location. The standard green fatigues and scoped rifle give little clue to the mission ahead which leaves that to the broad imagination of the beholder. That story will soon be left to the next lucky collector who possesses this beautiful piece of history.
