Description

G.I. Joe 15th Anniversary Cobra Command Team with "Pimp Daddy" Destro Pre-Production Sample AFA 85 ** POP 1, Highest Grade ** (Hasbro, 1997). Few late-era G.I. Joe pieces carry the mystique of the so-called "Pimp Daddy" Destro, the notorious leopard-accented variation developed for the 1997 15th Anniversary Cobra Command Team. The color scheme emerged during the set's development when designer John Boyce worked with hand-painter Steve Masso on a new look for Destro, and the result pushed the character in a far bolder direction than what ultimately reached the market. Contemporary research into the figure's history has long shown that the look advanced into production testing before being halted, after which the decoration was toned down for the standard released version. The broader story of how many examples escaped, and whether any reached retail, remains one of the line's most debated chapters, which only adds to the aura surrounding authentic survivors. This example, however, stands apart from the familiar lore. Per the provenance supplied for this lot, it is a pre-production packaged sample sent from China for approval, one of only four such packaged examples believed to have been made. Two were sent to the United States with loose samples for review, while the two remaining Chinese-made examples are unaccounted for. Its lack of a production serial stamp on the cardback is consistent with that approval-sample status, and its provenance from Derryl DePriest places it firmly within the inner history of the brand's development.

Graded AFA 85 NM+, with subgrades of C85 B85 F85, this piece is the highest graded example of only 2 pieces. As a packaged pre-production sample tied to one of the most legendary canceled color schemes in the entire G.I. Joe line, it occupies a category all its own. The enduring popularity of this version is underscored by the fact that Hasbro has revisited the concept twice in official form, first with a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive in 2007, and more recently with the G.I. Joe Classified Series Profit Director Destro. For the advanced G.I. Joe collector, this is the kind of piece that transcends ordinary rarity. It captures a moment when an iconic character was briefly taken in an unexpectedly flamboyant direction, only to be pulled back before conventional release, leaving behind one of the hobby's most famous what-ifs. Equal parts pre-production artifact, brand history, and collecting legend, it stands among the most compelling Cobra items of the modern era.
